1st IEEE International Workshop on Open-Source 6G Networks for Connecting the Unconnected (Open6GNet)

June 23, 2025 in Budapest, Hungary we organized first time the Open6GNet workshop co-located with the IEEE Netsoft Conference. We find it very important to bring into focus the discussion about the role of open-source projects for the evolution towards 6G Networks.

Prof. Magedanz (TU Berlin, Germany) introduced the broader OpenRIT6G initiative, targeting to enable cost-effective research infrastructure toolkits worldwide and the Open6GNet sub-initiative, where only open-source toolkits are considered for building reference testbeds for academia and beyond.

The workshop featured two comprehensive technical sessions that showcased cutting-edge research in network advancement. The first session focused on advanced network features and performance optimization, presenting innovative solutions for enhancing network efficiency and capabilities. The second session concentrated on architectural innovation, featuring proposals for optimized designs that will shape the next generation of networks.

The workshop culminated in an engaging panel discussion that brought together distinguished professors and emerging researchers who had contributed to the day’s presentations. This diverse group of experts shared valuable perspectives on how open-source development is influencing the evolution of 6G networks, while also examining the unique challenges that arise during collaborative open-source initiatives in this field.

This workshop establishes a foundation for collaborative innovation and open-source development in the journey toward 6G networks.
